What is the difference between a Portable Appliance and a Fixed Appliance?

A portable appliance is an item of equipment that weighs less than 18kg that can be moved whether it is plugged in or not.  Items such as PC towers and monitors are often mistaken for fixed appliances as site don’t often move them, but that is not the case as they can still be moved even if they choose to leave them in the same place.

A fixed appliance is an item of equipment that is wired in to a fuse spur switch, or over the weight limit to be moved. Appliances such as hand dryers, water heaters, electric towel radiators, wall heaters are usually fixed.
