One assumption is that although an appliance for example, a PC tower, is movable, it doesn’t get moved and therefore people assume this makes the item a fixed appliance. Whilst we fully understand the thinking behind this unfortunately this is not correct.

A portable appliance is an item of equipment less than 18 kg that is intended to be moved while in operation or an appliance that can easily be moved from one place to another, PC tower, toaster, fan heater, extension lead etc.

An item of fixed equipment or a fixed appliance is equipment that is fastened to a support or otherwise secured in a specified location, e.g. central heating boiler, hand dryer, fixed air-conditioning, electric towel rail etc.
